Processing Anxiety

IT is Hard to be present in our bodies when we feel dissonance, discomfort, or fear

Whether it’s ‘Perfectionism,’ ‘Catastrophic Thinking,’ or ‘Worry’– anxiety always includes a painful thought pattern that speeds things up and takes us out of our bodies, and into future, past, slightly scattered or dissociative thinking. This could very well be sparked by a dissonant environment in our bodies that feels unsafe or intolerable in some way. Our bodies can hold exiled feelings, exhausted strategies of protection, burdensome beliefs, painful memories, stiffness, pain, and illness. Often, what we lock-away (in an attempt to shut it down) can be trauma. It can feel vague yet be powerful in pushing us into a fight, flight, freeze/defensive reactions. Trauma therapists say, “while we are supposed to live in our bodies and use our minds as a tool, we live in our minds and use our bodies as tools.” Stress exacerbates this tendency and adds to our experience of the extreme depletion and isolation of living in our heads and out of our bodies. We’ve probably all experienced how trying to ‘maintain’ by shutting down, ends up shutting down all of our resources for rejuvenation and connection as well.

To get back into our bodies, where we can connect and rejuvenate through our senses, we can:

Slow down * Simplify * Get Specific

Movement Counseling allows us to do this by applying our non-judgmental witness  (attentiveness) to bear upon our personal struggle. And then by moving into the weight, breath, and realness of our bodies, we put a personal DIFFICULTY into the weaving hands of motion, rhythm, metaphor, and tracking which allows our nervous systems to more fully process and re-integrate the many layers of our experience. Does this sound interesting to you?

Applying our non-judgmental witness to bear upon our personal struggle then begins a phase of Attunement and deeper understanding. INTEGRATION of a GOLDEN GEM ends our session. You will always learn something, something of value to inspire freshness and renewal, to bring you back more fully to yourself. Guaranteed.
